Harhur

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Harhur is the head of one of the Nethinim families whose descendants return from the Babylonian exile. The name appears only in the two parallel rosters of returnees, and both lists place him in the same neighborhood of names.

Among the Nethinim of the Return

Ezra's roster names the family in a string of Nethinim houses: "the sons of Bakbuk, the sons of Hakupha, the sons of Harhur," (Ezra 2:51). The same wording is repeated when Nehemiah preserves the parallel list: "the sons of Bakbuk, the sons of Hakupha, the sons of Harhur," (Nehemiah 7:53). The repetition fixes Harhur as a recognized Nethinim ancestor whose descendants are counted twice — once in Ezra's record of the original return, once in Nehemiah's independent transcription of the same census.
