Harosheth

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Harosheth — "Harosheth of the Gentiles" — is the base of Sisera, captain of Jabin's army. It appears only in the Deborah-Barak narrative, marking three points in that battle: Sisera's home, the muster of his chariots, and the destination of Barak's pursuit.

Sisera's Home

Harosheth is introduced as Sisera's residence when Jabin's oppression of Israel begins: "And Yahweh sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, who dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles" (Jdg 4:2).

Muster Point of the Chariots

When Sisera musters against Israel, Harosheth is the staging ground from which his chariot force advances to the Kishon: "And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people who were with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles, to the river Kishon" (Jdg 4:13).

End of Barak's Pursuit

After the rout, Barak chases the Canaanite force back to its origin, where the army is wiped out: "But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the host, to Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; there was not a man left" (Jdg 4:16).
