Hatita

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Hatita is the head of one of the gatekeeper (porter) families whose descendants returned from Babylonian exile. The name appears only in the parallel return-registers of Ezra 2 and Nehemiah 7, where the sons of Hatita are counted among the six porter clans posted at the rebuilt sanctuary.

The Ezra register groups the porter-families together and totals them at the end of the line: "The sons of the porters: the sons of Shallum, the sons of Ater, the sons of Talmon, the sons of Akkub, the sons of Hatita, the sons of Shobai, in all a hundred thirty and nine." (Ezr 2:42). The Nehemiah parallel keeps the same six names in the same order but records one fewer member: "The porters: the sons of Shallum, the sons of Ater, the sons of Talmon, the sons of Akkub, the sons of Hatita, the sons of Shobai, a hundred thirty and eight." (Ne 7:45). Hatita's house stands fifth in the porter-list and is the only attestation of the name.
