Hazaiah

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Hazaiah is a Judahite ancestor named in the resettlement roster of Nehemiah 11, which records who was living in Jerusalem after the return from exile. He surfaces inside a long patronymic chain rather than as an actor in his own right.

A Man of the Tribe of Judah

The chain runs back through six generations to anchor a current resident in the family of Shelah:

"and Maaseiah the son of Baruch, the son of Colhozeh, the son of Hazaiah, the son of Adaiah, the son of Joiarib, the son of Zechariah, the son of the Shilonite" (Ne 11:5).

Hazaiah stands midway in the lineage that legitimates Maaseiah's place among the men of Judah dwelling in the city. The verse preserves the name solely as a generational marker in the post-exilic record of those who repopulated Jerusalem.
