Hazar-Susah

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Hazar-susah is one of the towns in Simeon's allotment, named once in the Joshua boundary-list and once in a parallel register in 1 Chronicles, where the form is Hazar-susim.

A town in Simeon's inheritance within Judah

The second lot of the tribal distribution falls to Simeon, "and their inheritance was in the midst of the inheritance of the sons of Judah." (Jos 19:1). The town-list that follows includes the name in its short form: "and Ziklag, and Beth-marcaboth, and Hazar-susah," (Jos 19:5).

The Chronicler retraces the same Simeonite settlements and gives the variant plural form of the name: "and at Beth-marcaboth, and Hazar-susim, and at Beth-biri, and at Shaaraim. These were their cities to the reign of David." (1Ch 4:31). The closing clause fixes the period of these towns "to the reign of David," tying the holdings back to a definite point in the early monarchy.
