Helam

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Helam is a place east of the Jordan, named in a single battle narrative during David's Syrian wars. It is the muster point where Hadarezer assembles troops drawn from beyond the River, and the field where David crosses the Jordan to meet them.

A Mustering Ground East of the Jordan

Hadarezer, after his initial defeat, draws fresh forces from across the Euphrates and concentrates them at Helam under his captain Shobach: "And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the River: and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer at their head" (2 Sam 10:16). The location lies east of the Jordan, since David must cross over to engage there.

David's Crossing and Battle

When the Syrian buildup is reported, David gathers Israel and goes to meet the threat in person: "And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him" (2 Sam 10:17). The verse names Helam twice in two lines — the place is fixed in the narrative as the staging-ground for both armies and the site where the engagement is joined.
