Hemdan

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Hemdan is named once in scripture, in the Edomite genealogy of Genesis 36. He stands among the sons of Dishon, a Horite chief, in the cluster of family-and-clan registers that map the inhabitants of Seir before and alongside Esau's line.

Son of Dishon

The single notice gives only the name and its placement among siblings: "And these are the sons of Dishon: Hemdan and Eshban and Ithran and Cheran" (Gen 36:26). Hemdan stands first of the four brothers in the listing. Nothing further is said of him — no descendants, no actions, no place name attached. The verse functions as a register entry, situating Hemdan within the Horite line of Seir that Genesis 36 catalogs alongside the descendants of Esau.
