Hena

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Hena appears in the UPDV only in the Assyrian taunt against Jerusalem, named alongside Hamath, Arpad, Sepharvaim, and Ivvah as a city whose gods and king did not save it from Assyria.

In the Rabshakeh's Taunt

Standing before the wall of Jerusalem, Rabshakeh appeals to the fate of conquered cities to break Hezekiah's resistance: "Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?" (2Ki 18:34).

In Sennacherib's Letter

The same list returns in Sennacherib's written threat to Hezekiah: "Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?" (2Ki 19:13). Isaiah's parallel preserves the wording: "Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?" (Isa 37:13). In each occurrence Hena names a city the Assyrians count as already swept away.
