Heres
Heres is the name of a mountain held by the Amorites in the territory the tribe of Dan was assigned but did not fully clear. The single mention sets it among the places where the older inhabitants stayed entrenched until the house of Joseph subdued them.
Mount Heres
The notice comes in the summary of unfinished conquest in Judges 1: "but the Amorites determined to dwell in mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to slave labor" (Judg 1:35). Mount Heres is the first of three Amorite holdings the verse names, paired with Aijalon and Shaalbim. The Amorites are said to have set their will on remaining there; the line is broken not by Dan but by Joseph, whose hand reduces the resistant population to forced labor rather than dispossessing them outright.
