Hilen

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Hilen is a city of Judah assigned to the priests. The same town appears in Joshua under the name Holon.

A Priestly City in the Chronicler's List

In the Chronicler's allotment of cities to the descendants of Aaron, Hilen is set with Debir among the towns given over with their pasture lands: "and Hilen with its suburbs, Debir with its suburbs" (1Ch 6:58).

The Same Town as Holon

Joshua's record names the place Holon. It first appears in the inheritance of Judah: "and Goshen, and Holon, and Giloh; eleven cities with their villages" (Josh 15:51). The Levitical-city list then sets it beside Debir, exactly as the Chronicler's parallel does: "and Holon with its suburbs, and Debir with its suburbs" (Josh 21:15). The two namings, Hilen and Holon, refer to the same priestly town.
