Hodaviah

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Three men in the UPDV bear the name Hodaviah: a chief in the half-tribe of Manasseh, a Benjamite ancestor, and a Levite ancestor of a returning house.

A Chief in Manasseh East of the Jordan

Hodaviah is named among the leading men of the eastern half-tribe of Manasseh: "And these were the heads of their fathers' houses: even Epher, and Ishi, and Eliel, and Azriel, and Jeremiah, and Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, mighty men of valor, famous men, heads of their fathers' houses" (1Ch 5:24).

A Benjamite Forefather

In the Chronicler's roster of returnees who settled at Jerusalem, Hodaviah stands in the line of a Benjamite house: "And of the sons of Benjamin: Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Hodaviah, the son of Hassenuah" (1Ch 9:7).

A Levite Ancestor of Returnees

Among the Levites in the register of those who came back from the captivity, Hodaviah is the head of a sub-group counted with Jeshua, Kadmiel, and Binnui: "The Levites: the sons of Jeshua and Kadmiel, through Binnui [and] Hodaviah, seventy and four" (Ezra 2:40).
