Husham

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Husham is the third king listed in the line of Edomite kings "before there reigned any king over the children of Israel." He is identified by his region: a man from the land of the Temanites.

In The Edomite King-List

The notice in Genesis is brief. After Jobab the son of Zerah, "Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his stead. And Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who struck Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Avith" (Gen 36:34-35). The list moves through Edom's kings in succession; Husham occupies one rung between Jobab and Hadad son of Bedad.

The Chronicler preserves the same line nearly word for word: "And Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his stead. And Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who struck Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his stead; and the name of his city was Avith" (1Chr 1:45-46).

Nothing else is said of him. His regional identifier — the Temanites, an Edomite clan — and his place between two named kings are the whole record.
