Hushim

People · Updated 2026-05-04

The name Hushim attaches to three distinct figures in the Hebrew genealogies: a son of Dan, a Benjamite listed among the descendants of Ir, and a wife of Shaharaim who bore him sons in the field of Moab. The references are scattered and brief, surfacing only inside lists of clan and family lineage.

Son of Dan

The first Hushim appears in the family record of Jacob's sons descending into Egypt: "And the sons of Dan: Hushim" (Gen 46:23). Hushim stands as Dan's only listed son in this passage.

The same Danite line is preserved in the wilderness census of Numbers, but under a metathesized form of the name: "These are the sons of Dan after their families: of Shuham, the family of the Shuhamites. These are the families of Dan after their families" (Num 26:42). UPDV here transliterates the Hebrew as Shuham rather than Hushim, naming the resulting clan the Shuhamites.

A Benjamite among the sons of Ir

A second Hushim appears in the Benjamite genealogy of Chronicles: "Shuppim also, and Huppim, the sons of Ir; Hushim, the son of another" (1Ch 7:12). A UPDV footnote on the verse notes that "another" may refer to Dan or may reflect a lack of information (per HOTTP and CTAT). The figure is named only here.

Wife of Shaharaim

A third Hushim is one of the wives of Shaharaim, a Benjamite who fathered children in Moab: "And Shaharaim begot children in the field of Moab, after he had sent them away; Hushim and Baara were his wives" (1Ch 8:8). The Benjamite line continues by tracing Shaharaim's offspring through her: "And of Hushim he begot Abitub and Elpaal" (1Ch 8:11).
