Ije-Abarim

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

A late camp in Israel's wilderness journey, located on the eastern frontier of Moab. UPDV records the site under two near-spellings — "Iyeabarim" in the narrative march, "Iye-abarim" in the itinerary catalogue — and the short form "Iyim" appears at the same point in the catalogue list.

On the Journey from Oboth

The narrative places the camp east of Moab, the next stop after Oboth: "And they journeyed from Oboth, and encamped at Iyeabarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrising" (Nu 21:11). The bearing — toward the sunrising — fixes the site east of Moabite territory.

In the Itinerary Catalogue

The later catalogue of stages records the same camp from Oboth, this time fixing it on the border of Moab: "And they journeyed from Oboth, and encamped in Iye-abarim, in the border of Moab" (Nu 33:44). The two passages name the same site at the same point in the journey.
