Ismaiah

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Ismaiah is a Gibeonite warrior who attached himself to David at Ziklag during the years David "kept himself close because of Saul" (1 Ch 12:1).

A Gibeonite Among the Thirty

He stands in the muster of ambidextrous archers and slingers from Benjamin (1 Ch 12:2) and is named in the chronicler's roster: "and Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty man among the thirty, and over the thirty" (1 Ch 12:4). UPDV writes the name "Ishmaiah." His ranking is unusual — both numbered with the thirty and "over the thirty" — and the chapter introduces him among David's "helpers in war" (1 Ch 12:1).
