Ithiel
Two men carry the name Ithiel in the UPDV. One stands in a Benjaminite genealogy among the post-exilic resettlers of Jerusalem; the other is the addressee of Agur's oracle in Proverbs and remains otherwise unidentified.
A Benjaminite Ancestor in Post-Exilic Jerusalem
The list of Benjaminites who took up residence in Jerusalem after the return traces Sallu's line back through six generations: "And these are the sons of Benjamin: Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Joed, the son of Pedaiah, the son of Kolaiah, the son of Maaseiah, the son of Ithiel, the son of Jeshaiah" (Neh 11:7). Ithiel appears here only as a link in the genealogy — a forefather named to anchor Sallu's descent within the tribe.
The Addressee of Agur's Oracle
In Proverbs the name belongs to a hearer rather than a speaker. The opening superscription reads, "The words of Agur the son of Jakeh; The oracle. The [noble] man says to Ithiel, to Ithiel and Ucal" (Prov 30:1). The doubled vocative — "to Ithiel, to Ithiel and Ucal" — frames Agur's sayings as words spoken to a particular auditor (paired with Ucal), but no further information about Ithiel surfaces in the chapter or elsewhere.
