Jahdai

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Jahdai is a descendant of Caleb known only from one verse in the Chronicler's genealogy of Judah, where he is named as the father of six sons.

A Calebite Father of Six Sons

The single occurrence reads: "And the sons of Jahdai: Regem, and Jothan, and Geshan, and Pelet, and Ephah, and Shaaph" (1Ch 2:47). Jahdai's name appears in the middle of the Caleb-line section — the Chronicler runs through "the sons of Caleb the brother of Jerahmeel" (1Ch 2:42), the lines through Mesha, Hebron, and Ephah (Caleb's concubine), and then drops Jahdai and his six sons in without further explanation. The list resumes immediately afterward with another concubine of Caleb, Maacah (1Ch 2:48), and the line of Shaaph the father of Madmannah.

The text gives Jahdai no patronymic, no wife, no narrative incident — only the six names belonging to him. His placement among the descendants of Caleb is the entire claim the verse makes about him.
