Jahmai

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Jahmai is named once, as one of six sons of Tola in the Chronicler's genealogy of Issachar.

A Son of Tola, Head of a Father's House

The single occurrence reads: "And the sons of Tola: Uzzi, and Rephaiah, and Jeriel, and Jahmai, and Ibsam, and Shemuel, heads of their fathers' houses, [to wit,] of Tola; mighty men of valor in their generations: their number in the days of David was two and twenty thousand and six hundred" (1Ch 7:2). Jahmai stands fourth in the list. The Chronicler applies the qualifying phrase — "heads of their fathers' houses... mighty men of valor in their generations" — to all six brothers together, and dates the count to David's reign.

In the Tribe of Issachar

The verse sits inside the short panel on Issachar. Tola is one of four named sons of Issachar (1Ch 7:1) — Tola, Puah, Jashub, Shimron — and the genealogy then traces the next generation through Tola alone, where Jahmai's name appears. The chapter goes on to count Issachar's whole muster: "All these were reckoned by genealogy in the days of David... 22,600" through Tola's line (1Ch 7:2), with the wider tribe totaling "87,000" reckoned mighty men of valor (1Ch 7:5). Jahmai appears in the verse and nowhere else in scripture.
