Janohah

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Janohah (rendered "Janoah" in the UPDV at Jos 16:6-7) is a town on the eastern stretch of Ephraim's tribal border. It appears only in the boundary description of Joshua 16, where it serves as a hinge between the line that turns east from Michmethath and the line that descends toward the Jordan.

On the Border of Ephraim

The Ephraimite frontier runs from Ataroth-addar in the east to Beth-horon the upper, then "the border went out westward at Michmethath on the north; and the border turned about eastward to Taanath-shiloh, and passed along it on the east of Janoah" (Jos 16:6). From there the line drops away: "and it went down from Janoah to Ataroth, and to Naarah, and reached to Jericho, and went out at the Jordan" (Jos 16:7). Janoah marks the corner where the border, having reached its easternmost turn, begins its descent through Ataroth and Naarah down to Jericho and the river.
