Jarah

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Jarah appears once in the genealogy of Saul's house. He is a descendant of Jonathan through Mephibosheth's line, named only as a link in the chain of fathers and sons that the Chronicler preserves to keep the Saulide memory alive after the monarchy passes to David's house.

Son of Ahaz

In the Benjaminite genealogy, Jarah is identified as the son of Ahaz and the father of Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri: "And Ahaz begot Jarah; and Jarah begot Alemeth, and Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri begot Moza" (1Ch 9:42). The verse stands in the Chronicler's roll of the inhabitants of Jerusalem after the return from exile, where the Saulide line is preserved alongside the priestly and Levitical registers. Jarah is one name in a continuous descent from Jonathan; the text records nothing more of him.
