Jeberechiah

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Jeberechiah is the father of one of the two faithful witnesses Isaiah summons during the Syro-Ephraimite crisis. He is named in a single verse and only as a patronymic; the focus stays on his son Zechariah, who together with Uriah the priest is to attest the prophet's tablet inscribed concerning Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

The faithful witness's father

Yahweh instructs Isaiah to take credible men to certify the symbolic name written on a great tablet. The two chosen are Uriah the priest and "Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah" (Isa 8:2). Jeberechiah himself does no act in the narrative; the verse identifies his son as the public, attested witness whose presence will guarantee the inscription before its meaning unfolds in the Assyrian advance. The patronymic locates Zechariah within a known household, lending the testimony its juridical weight.
