Jehalelel

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Jehalelel — written Jehallelel in the UPDV — appears once as a Levite of Merari's line, named only as the father of Azariah in the list of those who answer Hezekiah's call to cleanse the temple. The UPDV form is identical to the spelling used for a Judahite in 1 Chronicles 4:16; this entry covers the Merarite Levite alone.

A father among the Merarites at Hezekiah's reform

When Hezekiah summons the Levites to sanctify the house of Yahweh, eight men from three Levitical clans rise to lead. Among the Merarites the verse names "Kish the son of Abdi, and Azariah the son of Jehallelel" (2Ch 29:12). Jehallelel himself does no act; he is identified solely as Azariah's father, and Azariah is one of the four-clan delegation that proceeds to cleanse and reconsecrate the temple after the apostasy of Ahaz. The single mention is the whole record of him.
