Jehonathan

People · Updated 2026-05-06

The name Jehonathan is borne in scripture by three different men: an overseer of David's outlying storehouses (the UPDV uses the shorter spelling Jonathan there), a Levite sent out by Jehoshaphat to teach the law in the cities of Judah, and a priest in the post-exilic priestly house of Shemaiah.

Overseer of David's Outlying Storehouses

In the administrative roster at the end of David's reign, two officers divide the royal treasures between palace and country: "And over the king's treasures was Azmaveth the son of Adiel: and over the treasures in the fields, in the cities, and in the villages, and in the castles, was Jonathan the son of Uzziah" (1Ch 27:25). The fields, cities, villages, and castles are all assigned to him as a single regional brief.

Levite in Jehoshaphat's Teaching Mission

When Jehoshaphat sends officials, Levites, and priests through the cities of Judah to teach the law, Jehonathan is named in the Levite contingent: "and with them the Levites, even Shemaiah, and Nethaniah, and Zebadiah, and Asahel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehonathan, and Adonijah, and Tobijah, and Tob-adonijah, the Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, the priests" (2Ch 17:8).

Priest of the House of Shemaiah

In Nehemiah's list of the heads of the priestly houses in the days of Joiakim, a Jehonathan represents the house of Shemaiah: "of Bilgah, Shammua; of Shemaiah, Jehonathan" (Neh 12:18).
