Jerahmeel

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Three men bear the name Jerahmeel: a son of Hezron whose line is recorded in the genealogies of Judah, a Levite of the house of Kish, and a royal officer of Jehoiakim during the prophetic crisis recounted in Jeremiah.

Son of Hezron

In the genealogies of Judah, Jerahmeel heads a list of three brothers: "The sons also of Hezron, who were born to him: Jerahmeel, and Ram, and Chelubai" (1Ch 2:9).

Son of Kish

Among the Levitical houses ordered for service, Jerahmeel appears as a son of Kish: "Of Kish; the sons of Kish: Jerahmeel" (1Ch 24:29).

Officer of Jehoiakim

A third Jerahmeel is an officer in the household of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and is sent against Baruch and Jeremiah after the burning of the prophetic scroll. "And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king's son, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet; but Yahweh hid them" (Jer 36:26).
