People · Updated 2026-05-06

Jeriah, also called Jerijah, is a descendant of Hebron and chief of the Hebronite house among the Levites in David's organization of the priestly and civil orders.

The Chief of Hebron's Sons

In the Levitical genealogies of David's reign, Jeriah heads the sons of Hebron: "The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the chief, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth" (1Ch 23:19). The same ordering appears in the order of priestly courses, with bracketed text-critical insertions: "And the sons of [Hebron]: Jeriah [the chief], Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, Jekameam the fourth" (1Ch 24:23).

Jerijah, Officer in David's Fortieth Year

Under the spelling Jerijah, the same Hebronite chief is identified at the head of the Hebronite muster in the fortieth year of David's reign: "Of the Hebronites was Jerijah the chief, even of the Hebronites, according to their generations by fathers' [houses]. In the fortieth year of the reign of David they were sought for, and there were found among them mighty men of valor at Jazer of Gilead" (1Ch 26:31).
