Jerioth

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Jerioth is named once, in the Calebite section of the Judahite genealogy.

In the House of Caleb son of Hezron

The verse pairs her name with Azubah in connection with Caleb's offspring: "And Caleb the son of Hezron begot [children] of Azubah [his] wife, and of Jerioth; and these were her sons: Jesher, and Shobab, and Ardon" (1Ch 2:18). Azubah is explicitly called Caleb's wife; Jerioth is named alongside her without that qualifier. The closing clause, "these were her sons," uses a singular feminine pronoun whose antecedent UPDV leaves as the verse leaves it — unspecified between the two women — and lists three sons: Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon. The bracketed insertions [children] and [his] mark places where UPDV supplies words to round out the Hebrew syntax in English.
