Jesaiah
Jesaiah, also spelled Jeshaiah, is the name borne by six different men in the post-exilic and late-monarchy records of Chronicles, Ezra, and Nehemiah. The UPDV consistently renders the name Jeshaiah in every occurrence. Three of the men appear in genealogies and service rosters of David's reorganized worship and treasury; three appear among the families that returned from Babylon under Zerubbabel and Ezra and the Benjamites who resettled Jerusalem.
In the Davidic Lineage
The first Jeshaiah stands several generations after Zerubbabel in the royal line of Judah. He appears among the descendants of Hananiah, alongside Pelatiah: "And the sons of Hananiah: Pelatiah, and Jeshaiah; the sons of Rephaiah, the sons of Arnan, the sons of Obadiah, the sons of Shecaniah" (1Ch 3:21).
Among the Sons of Jeduthun
A second Jeshaiah belongs to the temple-music guild of Jeduthun. He is one of the six sons listed under his father's hand for the harp-led prophetic service: "Of Jeduthun; the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, and Zeri, and Jeshaiah and Shimei, Hashabiah and Mattithiah, six, under the hands of their father Jeduthun with the harp, who prophesied in giving thanks and praising Yahweh" (1Ch 25:3). When the courses of singers are assigned by lot, his draw is recorded plainly: "the eighth to Jeshaiah, his sons and his brothers, twelve" (1Ch 25:15).
In the Line of Eliezer
A third Jeshaiah stands in the genealogy of the treasurers descended from Moses' son Eliezer. The line is traced through five generations: "And his brothers: of Eliezer [came] Rehabiah his son, and Jeshaiah his son, and Joram his son, and Zichri his son, and Shelomoth his son" (1Ch 26:25).
A Returnee of the Family of Elam
In Ezra's roster of those who came back from exile with him, Jeshaiah son of Athaliah leads a contingent of seventy men: "And of the sons of Elam, Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah; and with him seventy males" (Ezr 8:7).
A Levite Among Ezra's Returnees
A second Jeshaiah in the same caravan is a Levite of the sons of Merari, summoned through the embassy Ezra sent to Iddo at Casiphia: "and Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brothers and their sons, twenty" (Ezr 8:19).
A Benjamite Ancestor in Jerusalem
The last Jeshaiah is named not as a contemporary but as an ancestor in the genealogy of Sallu, a Benjamite chosen to dwell in the rebuilt Jerusalem after the return: "And these are the sons of Benjamin: Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Joed, the son of Pedaiah, the son of Kolaiah, the son of Maaseiah, the son of Ithiel, the son of Jeshaiah" (Ne 11:7).
