Jesharelah

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Jesharelah is a Levite named once in scripture as the head of the seventh course of singers in the temple service organized under David. He stands among twenty-four leaders whose sons and brothers were divided by lot into rotations of twelve, distributing the work of song and instrument across the year.

Seventh of the Singing Courses

The casting of lots in 1 Chronicles 25 ranks the choral families without regard to age or rank — "they cast lots for their offices, all alike, the small as well as the great, the teacher as the scholar" (1Ch 25:8). The seventh lot fell to Jesharelah: "the seventh to Jesharelah, his sons and his brothers, twelve" (1Ch 25:14). The fixed company of twelve marks his course as one unit in the rotation of trained musicians; his name is preserved only here, embedded in the roster that orders the singing of the sanctuary.
