Jeshebeab

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Jeshebeab is a priest named once in scripture as the head of the fourteenth course in the rotation organized for service at the house of Yahweh. He belongs to the twenty-four divisions established by lot under David, each course taking its turn in sacrificial and sanctuary duty.

Fourteenth of the Priestly Courses

The list of priestly lots in 1 Chronicles 24 names Jeshebeab in sequence with his neighbors: "the thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab" (1Ch 24:13). The roster closes with a statement of legal authority — "this was the ordering of them in their service, to come into the house of Yahweh according to the ordinance [given] to them by Aaron their father, as Yahweh, the God of Israel, had commanded him" (1Ch 24:19). His one-line entry sets him within that ordered priesthood as one of the fathers' houses to whom a fixed turn of service was assigned.
