Jeshishai

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Jeshishai is named once in scripture, in the Gadite genealogy of 1 Chronicles. His name occupies a single link in a long ancestral chain that reaches back through the tribe's heads of fathers' houses settled in Bashan.

In the Gadite Line of Bashan

The Chronicler places the sons of Gad east of the Jordan, "in the land of Bashan to Salecah" (1Ch 5:11), and then traces one of their fathers' houses up through several generations: "These were the sons of Abihail, the son of Huri, the son of Jaroah, the son of Gilead, the son of Michael, the son of Jeshishai, the son of Jahdo, the son of Buz" (1Ch 5:14). Jeshishai stands midway in this chain, bridging the deeper ancestors at its head and the descendants whose roll closes the section. He is identified only by patronymic position; the genealogy preserves his name as one rung in the line that produced the recorded heads of the tribe.
