Jeuel

Jeuel is named once as a descendant of Zerah, gathered with the sons of Judah who resettled in Jerusalem after the exile. His line is reckoned in the Chronicler's census of returnees by tribe and clan, and his name represents a sizable branch of Zerah's house among the postexilic city's inhabitants.

A Zerahite in Resettled Jerusalem

The opening of 1 Chronicles 9 describes who lived in Jerusalem after the return: "And in Jerusalem dwelt of the sons of Judah, and of the sons of Benjamin, and of the sons of Ephraim and Manasseh" (1Ch 9:3). The roll moves through the Judahite branches and reaches Zerah's line: "And of the sons of Zerah: Jeuel, and their brothers, six hundred and ninety" (1Ch 9:6). The closing tally — six hundred and ninety brothers reckoned with him — gives weight to his single notice; he stands at the head of a numbered company belonging to the Zerahite share of the Judahite settlement of Jerusalem.
