Jeush

People · Updated 2026-05-03

The name Jeush is borne by four distinct men in the Hebrew canon: a son of Esau by his Hittite wife Oholibamah, a Benjamite descended from Jediael through Bilhan, a Gershonite Levite in the line of Shimei, and a son of King Rehoboam of Judah. None of the four occupies the narrative foreground; each surfaces inside a genealogical or registry passage, and the line of the text in each case is the household into which Jeush is being placed.

The Edomite Chief

The first Jeush appears in the toledot of Esau. Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon, bears three sons to Esau in Canaan: "and Oholibamah bore Jeush, and Jalam, and Korah: these are the sons of Esau, who were born to him in the land of Canaan" (Gen 36:5). The same triad is repeated when the chapter restates Esau's wives and their issue (Gen 36:14). When the genealogy turns from biological descent to political rank, the three brothers are again listed together, this time titled: "And these are the sons of Oholibamah, Esau's wife: chief Jeush, chief Jalam, chief Korah: these are the chiefs who came of Oholibamah the daughter of Anah, Esau's wife" (Gen 36:18). The Chronicler's parallel summary picks up the same Esau line and seats Jeush among his half-brothers from the other wives: "The sons of Esau: Eliphaz, Reuel, and Jeush, and Jalam, and Korah" (1Ch 1:35).

The Benjamite

The second Jeush stands in the muster of Benjamin. The Chronicler traces Benjamin's son Jediael to a single named descendant, Bilhan, and then names Bilhan's seven sons: "And the sons of Jediael: Bilhan. And the sons of Bilhan: Jeush, and Benjamin, and Ehud, and Chenaanah, and Zethan, and Tarshish, and Ahishahar" (1Ch 7:10). Jeush appears here only as a head-name in the tribal roll; the surrounding context concerns Benjamite military reckoning and yields no biographical detail beyond the placement.

The Levite

The third Jeush is a Gershonite Levite registered when David organizes the temple service. Within the Gershonite house, Shimei's line is set out: "And the sons of Shimei: Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei" (1Ch 23:10). The next verse explains how that fourfold line was administratively consolidated: "And Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons; therefore they became a fathers' house in one reckoning" (1Ch 23:11). Jeush and Beriah, lacking the descendants needed to constitute two separate houses, are joined into a single father's house for the purposes of the Levitical roster.

The Prince of Judah

The fourth Jeush is a prince of the Davidic house. After Rehoboam takes Mahalath, the granddaughter of David through Jerimoth and Abihail, the Chronicler records the children she bore him: "and she bore him sons: Jeush, and Shemariah, and Zaham" (2Ch 11:19). The verse names him only; no later passage tracks his career or succession.
