Joanna
Joanna is one of the women who travel with Jesus during his Galilean itinerant ministry and provide for the company out of their own resources. She is identified by her marriage — her husband Chuzas serves as steward in Herod's household, which places Joanna unusually close to the political establishment Jesus' movement otherwise stands apart from.
Among the Women Who Followed Jesus
Luke names Joanna as part of a small group of women travelling with Jesus and the Twelve: "and Joanna the wife of Chuzas Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, who were serving them out of their substance" (Luke 8:3). The detail that her husband manages Herod's affairs marks her out from the other women in the list. The support she gives is material — she funds the mission "out of their substance," not as a passive donor at a distance but as one of the companions on the road.
