Jokmeam

Places · Updated 2026-05-07

Jokmeam is a Levitical town in the territory of Ephraim, granted with its surrounding pasture-lands to the Kohathite branch of Levi.

A Kohathite City in Ephraim

The Chronicler describes the allotment by tribe and Levitical family. "And some of the families of the sons of Kohath had cities of their borders out of the tribe of Ephraim" (1Ch 6:66). The list begins with the city of refuge, Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, paired with Gezer (1Ch 6:67).

Jokmeam appears next in the sequence: "and Jokmeam with its suburbs, and Beth-horon with its suburbs, and Aijalon with its suburbs, and Gath-rimmon with its suburbs" (1Ch 6:68-69). It is grouped with Beth-horon, Aijalon, and Gath-rimmon as one of the Kohathite holdings carved out of Ephraim, each given with its surrounding pasture-lands for the Levitical inhabitants.
