Jokneam

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Jokneam is a Levitical city of Zebulun, lying near Mount Carmel and given to the Merarite Levites in the allotment of Joshua.

A Canaanite Royal City

In the roll of kings struck down by Joshua west of the Jordan, Jokneam appears as a royal seat in Carmel: "the king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam in Carmel, one;" (Jos 12:22).

On the Border of Zebulun

The tribal allotment of Zebulun runs by the city: "and their border went up westward, even to Maralah, and reached to Dabbesheth; and it reached to the brook that is before Jokneam;" (Jos 19:11).

A City of the Merarite Levites

In the assignment of Levitical cities, Jokneam is given to the sons of Merari: "And to the families of the sons of Merari, the rest of the Levites, out of the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with its suburbs, and Kartah with its suburbs," (Jos 21:34).
