Joshah

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Joshah appears once in the text, named in a Simeonite list of clan chiefs whose houses expanded enough that the tribe pressed outward in search of pasture.

A Simeonite Chief

The chronicler has just summarized Simeon's settlements: "and all their villages that were round about the same cities, to Baal. These were their habitations, and they have their genealogy" (1Ch 4:33). The roll of names then opens, and Joshah stands among the first three: "And Meshobab, and Jamlech, and Joshah the son of Amaziah," (1Ch 4:34). The single notice supplied is patronymic — son of Amaziah.

The list is summarized at its close: "these mentioned by name were princes in their families: and their fathers' houses increased greatly" (1Ch 4:38). Joshah is among the chiefs whose growing houses drove the Simeonite expansion that follows in the chapter.
