Joshbekashah

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Joshbekashah is one of the fourteen sons of Heman, the king's seer and head of one of the three musical guilds David appoints for service at the sanctuary. He appears only in 1 Chronicles 25 — first in the listing of Heman's sons, then in the casting of lots that fixes the order of the singing courses.

Among the Sons of Heman

The catalogue of Heman's sons names them in a single long sequence: "Of Heman; the sons of Heman: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, and Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, and Romamti-ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, Mahazioth" (1 Chr 25:4). Joshbekashah's place is in the second half of the list, between Romamti-ezer and Mallothi.

Leader of the Seventeenth Course

When lots are cast to assign the singing courses their order, Joshbekashah draws the seventeenth: "for the seventeenth to Joshbekashah, his sons and his brothers, twelve" (1 Chr 25:24). Like the other twenty-three courses he leads a unit of twelve — his sons and brothers reckoned together as one division of the temple singers.
