Jubal

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Jubal appears once in scripture, in the Cainite genealogy that traces the early development of human craft and culture. He is named as the brother of Jabal and the originator of an entire branch of human artistry — instrumental music.

The Father of Harp and Pipe

The line of Lamech in Genesis 4 catalogs a series of cultural firsts. After Jabal is identified as the ancestor of tent-dwelling herdsmen, Jubal is introduced in the same breath: "And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and pipe" (Gen 4:21). The two named instruments span the basic categories of music — strings and winds — and the formula "the father of all such as handle..." casts Jubal as the founding head of every later musician working those instruments. Within the Cainite line, music takes its place alongside livestock-keeping (Jabal) and metalwork (Tubal-cain) as one of the foundational arts of human civilization.
