Karkor

Places · Updated 2026-05-07

Karkor appears once in scripture, as the place where the Midianite kings Zebah and Zalmunna gathered the remnant of their forces during Gideon's pursuit.

Where Zebah and Zalmunna Made Their Stand

After the rout at the camp east of the Jordan, the two surviving Midianite kings fall back with what is left of their army. The narrator gives the location and a count: "Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all who were left of all the host of the sons of the east; for there fell a hundred and twenty thousand swordsmen" (Judg 8:10). The verse establishes Karkor as the regrouping point of the Midianite remnant — fifteen thousand survivors out of an original force of one hundred thirty-five thousand — and as the next destination of Gideon's pursuit. It is a place named only because the chase reaches it.
