Kenaz

People · Updated 2026-05-02

The name Kenaz belongs to four distinct figures in the UPDV: a grandson of Esau and an Edomite chief who share the name in the genealogy of Edom, the father of the judge Othniel, and a later descendant of Caleb. Three of the four are tied to the household of Caleb and Israel's deliverance under the judges; the other two stand inside the Edomite line that runs parallel to Israel from Esau onward.

Kenaz in the line of Esau

Kenaz first appears as one of the sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn of Esau: "And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz" (Gen 36:11). The same chapter, listing the chiefs descended from Esau, names him again: "These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz the firstborn of Esau: chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Zepho, chief Kenaz" (Gen 36:15). The Chronicler's parallel preserves the same genealogy: "The sons of Eliphaz: Teman, and Omar, Zephi, and Gatam, Kenaz, and Timna, and Amalek" (1Ch 1:36).

A second Kenaz appears later in the same chapter as a chief of Edom in his own right: "chief Kenaz, chief Teman, chief Mibzar" (Gen 36:42). The Chronicler again preserves the list: "chief Kenaz, chief Teman, chief Mibzar" (1Ch 1:53). The Edomite Kenaz is one chief among many, named without narrative — a marker of the Edomite tribal structure that runs alongside Israel's.

Kenaz the father of Othniel

The most narratively prominent Kenaz is the father of Othniel and a kinsman of Caleb. The conquest narrative identifies him at the taking of Kiriath-sepher: "And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife" (Jos 15:17). The opening of Judges repeats the same account with the patronymic intact: "And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife" (Jud 1:13).

When the cycle of the judges begins, Kenaz's son becomes Israel's first deliverer: "And when the sons of Israel cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised up a savior to the sons of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother" (Jud 3:9). His death closes the era of rest that follows: "And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died" (Jud 3:11). The Chronicler's genealogy fills in the household: "And the sons of Kenaz: Othniel, and Seraiah. And the sons of Othniel: Hathath" (1Ch 4:13).

Kenaz himself never speaks or acts in the narrative; his name carries the line through which Othniel is identified at every appearance — at the conquest of Debir, at the raising up of the first judge, and at the close of his forty years of rest.

Kenaz the descendant of Caleb

A later Kenaz appears in the Calebite genealogy of 1 Chronicles 4: "And the sons of Caleb the son of Jephunneh: Iru, Elah, and Naam; and the sons of Elah; and Kenaz" (1Ch 4:15). This Kenaz is named only once and only as a name in the list — a great-grandson of Caleb son of Jephunneh, distinct from the Kenaz who fathered Othniel and from the two Edomite bearers of the name.
