Kishi is a Levite of the line of Merari, named in the Chronicler's genealogies as the father of Ethan, one of the chief assistants in the temple music. UPDV preserves two forms of his name across the two passages — Kishi in the Levitical genealogy of 1 Chronicles 6, and Kushaiah in the appointment list of 1 Chronicles 15.

Father of Ethan the Merarite

The genealogy of the Levitical singers traces Ethan's line through Merari and through Kishi: "And on the left hand their brothers the sons of Merari: Ethan the son of Kishi, the son of Abdi, the son of Malluch" (1 Chr 6:44). When David appoints the singers to bring up the ark, the same Ethan appears, but his father is named with the alternate form: "So the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel; and of his brothers, Asaph the son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari their brothers, Ethan the son of Kushaiah" (1 Chr 15:17). The two passages are about the same man — Ethan's father — under two slightly different forms of the name.
