Kohath

People · Updated 2026-05-04

Kohath is the second son of Levi, the bridge between the patriarch and the priestly clan that would carry Israel's most sacred objects through the wilderness. His name first appears in the migration to Egypt and reappears in genealogies, family musters, and marching orders that frame the tabernacle service of his descendants.

Son of Levi

Kohath is named in the second slot among Levi's three sons in the seventy who came down to Egypt: "And the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari" (Gen 46:11). The same triad is repeated when Moses and Aaron's family is introduced at the burning-bush sequel: "And these are the names of the sons of Levi according to their generations: Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari; and the years of the life of Levi were a hundred thirty and seven years" (Ex 6:16).

Grandfather of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam

Kohath's line is traced one generation forward in the Numbers census of the plains of Moab: "And Kohath begot Amram. And the name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt: and she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister" (Num 26:58-59). Kohath is thus the grandfather of the deliverer, the high priest, and the prophetess.

Father of the Kohathite Families

Kohath himself fathers four sons, who become the heads of the Kohathite clans. Exodus gives the list with his lifespan: "And the sons of Kohath: Amram, and Izhar, and Hebron, and Uzziel; and the years of the life of Kohath were a hundred thirty and three years" (Ex 6:18). Numbers repeats the four-name list at the wilderness census — "And the sons of Kohath by their families: Amram, and Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel" (Num 3:19) — and then names the resulting clans: "And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, and the family of the Izharites, and the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites: these are the families of the Kohathites" (Num 3:27).

The Kohathites in the Camp

When Israel is mustered around the tabernacle, the Kohathites receive a named chief: "And the prince of the fathers' house of the families of the Kohathites will be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel" (Num 3:30). The clan is counted alongside the other Levitical divisions: "And Moses and Aaron and the princes of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites by their families, and by their fathers' houses" (Num 4:34).

Bearers of the Sanctuary

The distinguishing service of the Kohathites is to carry the holiest furniture once Aaron and his sons have wrapped it for transport. The order is precise and the warning sharp: "And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the furniture of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath will come to bear it: but they will not touch the sanctuary, or they will die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting" (Num 4:15). Yahweh's concern for the clan's survival under that burden is explicit: "Don't cut off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites" (Num 4:18).

When the camp moves out, the Kohathites take their place in the marching order behind the standards: "And the Kohathites set forward, bearing the sanctuary: and [the others] had set up the tabernacle against their coming" (Num 10:21). The structural frame meets them on arrival; they bring the sacred contents into the already-pitched tent.
