Kore

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Two men named Kore appear in the Chronicler's records of temple service — both Levites, both connected with the gatekeeping and storehouse offices of the sanctuary, but distinct in lineage and generation.

A Korahite of the gatekeeping line

The first Kore is in the Korahite line that traces from Korah through Ebiasaph. He appears as the father of Shallum, who oversaw the doorkeeping of the tent: "And Shallum the son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his brothers, of his father's house, the Korahites, were over the work of the service, keepers of the thresholds of the tent: and their fathers had been over the camp of Yahweh, keepers of the entry." (1Ch 9:19). The same line surfaces in David's organization of the doorkeepers, where Kore is now named as the father of Meshelemiah: "For the courses of the doorkeepers: of the Korahites, Meshelemiah the son of Kore, of the sons of Ebiasaph." (1Ch 26:1). The pedigree is consistent — Korahite, of Ebiasaph's house — and the office is consistent: the doorkeeping of the sanctuary.

A Levite, keeper of the east gate

The second Kore lives in Hezekiah's reign and oversees the freewill-offerings: "And Kore the son of Imnah the Levite, the porter at the east [gate], was over the freewill-offerings of God, to distribute the oblations of Yahweh, and the most holy things." (2Ch 31:14). The bracketed [gate] is a UPDV insertion supplying the implied noun. His patronymic — son of Imnah — sets him apart from the earlier Korahite Kore, and his charge is administrative: receiving the people's freely given offerings and distributing them among the priestly portions.
