Maarath
Maarath is a town named once in scripture, in the city-list of the tribe of Judah's allotment.
A town in Judah's hill-country
The hill-country section of Judah's allotment opens at Joshua 15:48 — "And in the hill-country, Shamir, and Jattir, and Socoh" — and runs through a sequence of city-groups. Maarath stands in the group that follows Halhul, Beth-zur, and Gedor (Jos 15:58): "and Maarath, and Beth-anoth, and Eltekon; six cities with their villages. Tekoa and Ephrathah (that is, Bethlehem) and Peor and Etam and Culon and Tatam and Shoresh and Cerem and Gallim and Bether and Manocho, eleven cities with their villages" (Jos 15:59). The town is named in the roll without further detail; its place is given by its neighbors in Judah's territory.
