Maaziah

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Two priests bear the name Maaziah, both at the edge of a list. One closes the twenty-four priestly courses David organizes for the temple service; the other puts his seal to Nehemiah's covenant after the return.

The Twenty-Fourth Course

In David's roster of priestly courses, Maaziah is the last name drawn: "the three and twentieth to Delaiah, the four and twentieth to Maaziah" (1Ch 24:18). The priestly service is divided by lot into twenty-four rotations, and Maaziah's house has the final turn.

Sealing Nehemiah's Covenant

Centuries later a priest of the same name signs the covenant Nehemiah's community swears after the rebuilding. He stands among the priests on the document: "Maaziah, Bilgai, Shemaiah; these were the priests" (Neh 10:8).
