Madai

Madai is the third son of Japheth in the table of nations, the eponymous ancestor traditionally identified with the Medes. The name occurs only in the two parallel genealogies, both fixed in the same order.

A Son of Japheth

The Genesis listing places Madai among Japheth's seven sons: "The sons of Japheth: Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras" (Gen 10:2). The Chronicler reproduces the line word for word: "The sons of Japheth: Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras" (1Ch 1:5). The position between Magog and Javan is preserved across both accounts.
