Magog
Magog appears in the UPDV first as a son of Japheth in the post-flood Table of Nations, then as a land named in Ezekiel's oracle against Gog, and finally as a paired name with Gog in Revelation's vision of the deceived nations gathered for the eschatological war. The same name carries across the three settings: a named son in a genealogy, a territory under prophetic judgment, and a symbolic designation for the enemies of God.
Son of Japheth
In the Table of Nations, Magog is listed second among the seven sons of Japheth: "The sons of Japheth: Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras" (Gen 10:2). The Chronicler's compressed genealogy repeats the same seven-son roster in the same order: "The sons of Japheth: Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras" (1Ch 1:5). At his first appearance Magog is exhibited as a name in the post-flood patriarchal line, fixed in the Japhethite branch alongside Gomer, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.
The Land of Magog in Ezekiel's Oracle
Ezekiel's oracle relocates the name from the genealogical list into a geography of judgment. Yahweh directs the prophet against a figure named Gog whose territory is identified as Magog: "Son of Man, set your face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him" (Eze 38:2). Magog is here a land, and Gog is its prince — paired with Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal in the oracle's address-list. The judgment-clause then turns directly on the land itself: "And I will send a fire on Magog, and on those who dwell securely in the isles; and they will know that I am Yahweh" (Eze 39:6). The fire is Yahweh's act; the recognition-formula — "they will know that I am Yahweh" — is the oracle's stated outcome.
Gog and Magog in Revelation
In Revelation, Magog is paired with Gog as a designation for the nations deceived and gathered for war at the close of the millennial vision: "and will come forth to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to the war: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea" (Rev 20:8). The two names that stood as prince-and-land in Ezekiel are placed together in Revelation as a double designation for the deceived nations from the four corners of the earth, gathered in numbers as the sand of the sea.
