Matred

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Matred appears in the Edomite king-list as the mother of Mehetabel, wife of Hadad, the last of the early Edomite kings noted before the Israelite monarchy. She is named only by way of her daughter's marriage and her own father, Me-zahab, in two parallel notices.

In the Edomite King-List

The Genesis notice closes the catalogue of Edomite kings with Hadad's reign and his marriage: "And Baal-hanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadad reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Pau; and his wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-zahab" (Gen 36:39).

The Chronicler repeats the entry with the city-name spelled Pai: "And Baal-hanan died, and Hadad reigned in his stead; and the name of his city was Pai: and his wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-zahab" (1 Chronicles 1:50).

In both notices Matred surfaces only as a link in the genealogical chain — daughter of Me-zahab, mother of Mehetabel — without any further narrative.
