Matthat
Two men named Matthat appear in the Lukan genealogy of Jesus — both standing as links in the chain of fathers running back from Joseph to Adam, and otherwise unknown.
Father of Heli
The first Matthat is named in the immediate ascending links from Joseph: "the [son] of Matthat, the [son] of Levi, the [son] of Melchi, the [son] of Jannai, the [son] of Joseph," (Luke 3:24). His son Heli stands one step closer to Joseph in the surrounding chain.
Father of Jorim
The second Matthat appears further back in the same genealogy, separated from the first by several generations: "the [son] of Jesus, the [son] of Eliezer, the [son] of Jorim, the [son] of Matthat, the [son] of Levi," (Luke 3:29). His descendant Jorim is the only further notice.
The two are distinguished only by their place in the genealogy and by the names of their immediate descendants.
