Mered

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Mered is one of the four sons of Ezrah listed in the Judahite genealogies of 1 Chronicles 4. He is named again at the close of the same notice as the husband of Bithiah, a daughter of Pharaoh.

A son of Ezrah

The first mention places Mered among his brothers: "And the sons of Ezrah: Jether, and Mered, and Epher, and Jalon; and she became pregnant with Miriam, and Shammai, and Ishbah the father of Eshtemoa" (1 Chr 4:17).

Husband of Bithiah, daughter of Pharaoh

The closing line of the unit ties him to a foreign-born wife and lists his line through her: "And his Jewish wife bore Jered the father of Gedor, and Heber the father of Soco, and Jekuthiel the father of Zanoah. And these are the sons of Bithiah the daughter of Pharaoh, whom Mered took" (1 Chr 4:18). The notice distinguishes between his Jewish wife, named as the mother of Jered, Heber, and Jekuthiel, and Bithiah the daughter of Pharaoh, whom Mered also took as wife.
